Because real leadership starts with how you kōrero.
Have you put off a tough conversation because it felt too stressful?
Addressing behaviour, underperformance, or broken commitments can trigger anxiety. What if you say the wrong thing? What if they react badly? What will everyone think of me? The uncertainty can be overwhelming.
So, you avoid it, but it doesn’t go away. Instead, it eats at you. Your mind replays the worst scenarios, and stress builds, affecting your focus, sleep, and peace of mind.
And when you finally have the conversation, does it lead to change? Are they engaged? Do they listen? Or do you find yourself having the same conversation over and over?
Speaking up is one thing. Being heard—and creating real change—is another.
Here's the truth..
After years of working with leaders, we uncovered a pattern: conversation avoidance is a major cause of burnout, frustration, and dissatisfaction.
Think about it—most of your stress, frustration, and overwhelm likely involve another person. The solution? Having the necessary conversation.

First Week Results
My AHA moment is about how much my emotional response to a situation contributes to the procrastination/putting off the conversation. Usually, my internal conversation is about my emotional response—how disappointing this is, how annoyed I am that I need to respond now, why does this person keep presenting me with this problem that I now need to do something about (again, all in my head, so there are no answers).
So, if I were to take that time and redirect it to preparation, I would get there faster and with less stress. Being curious is just that. It’s not an allegation, it’s just questions. I am going to practice this week.
I had a kōrero with a team member yesterday about her performance. I had been feeling very negative and frustrated about it. I wrote down my 8 things, visualised it going positively and what that would look like going well, having an open conversation. Admittedly I found it hard for my brain to not wonder into the ‘worst case scenario’ but I didn’t dwell on it!
Had the kōrero which went well, will be having weekly check-ins now and will remember to be curious and ask lots of questions. 🙂 Overall, I was pleased with the result as I always felt so awful prior to having conversations like this.
Wow, where do I start? I am familiar with a lot of this kōrero, but of course, it is in the application that matters to me most right now. My ah-ha is ‘stay open, stay curious and stay safe’ in a nutshell. Processing and regulating ‘emotions’ will be ongoing for me and it will be a great breakthrough in my ‘connecting kōrero’. I’m going to practice with my mokopuna first and then whai manaaki. Noho ora mai.
Hi, my aha moment was about lifting the mana. I love the idea that is important to lift and maintain the mana of the other person and not make them feel bad. I was very touched about point 3, focusing on what’s good about the person and changing the wairua in the room. Really great to go into the kōrero with a positive mindset and set a positive tone.

What Our Participants Say About Connecting Kōrero
This short course is packed with so much useful information that you can apply to all aspects of life. It has really shifted how I now process these kōrero, by starting with the prep work. I am feeling 100 times more confident with these handy frameworks provided.
Connecting Kōrero changed the game for me! No more overthinking, no more stressing—I’ve learned how to approach tough kōrero with confidence, protect my mana, and actually create better outcomes (without the awkwardness or regret).
This isn’t just a course—it’s a toolkit for life. Whether you work in healthcare, leadership, or community mahi or just want to handle conversations better (yes, even the ones at the dinner table!), I highly recommend it!
This course has provided me with some amazing strategies for having connecting kōrero with my colleagues. I can absolutely see the benefits of this course and how the strategies can make a difference in my workplace as we continue to use them.
I will be highly recommending that more of my colleagues and my manager sign up for this because the more of us who know the strategies, the easier it will be to implement them and see and feel the changes to our kaupapa.

I found connecting Korero to be truly enlightening. It not only provided me with practical strategies to enhance my approach, but also affirmed the value of what I’m already doing. It was encouraging to see my current practices reflected and supported in the course content.
Connecting with Kōrero has been an empowering experience that gave me a real sense of mana. It helped me shape my own wairua and strengthened my ability to connect deeply with colleagues, whānau, and friends. The tools are extremely powerful — they’ve transformed the way I communicate, guiding me to speak with intention, empathy, and authenticity.
I can be cynical of courses especially over the years, but I can honestly say I have enjoyed every day I have been part of this.
I jumped into Connecting Kōrero because nothing happens without successful connections in communication and there were conversations in my life I could not have including breakups, creating new relationships and death.
Being in the program was easy and gave me the space to play in my life with these difficult conversations including some simple strategies around setting up the space for the conversation, getting curious about the other person and regulating our own emotions.
The course was easy to follow and the feedback was very helpful. It was also an opportunity to get insights into how others were going and what they were using the strategies for.
I’m a lot more calmer in myself in difficult conversations and am more willing to have these conversations now. I’m grateful to the Kānuka Team and appreciate their support. Nga mihi.

I am the kind of person who keeps to myself when it comes to conversation. I usually look, listen and observe; however, if something is wrong, I am not afraid to question and give my opinion. Because I am straightforward, I sometimes step on other people’s pride. With this training, I now have the tools to improve and transform myself into a better leader.
Kānuka has given me tools that will help me in the future as kaimahi. Tools to observe and act accordingly to the situation without judgement or discourse. Good or not so good.
Kānuka is a learning programme that helps you to learn about yourself and how you react in certain situations. Kānuka gives you tools to improve and gives you confidence to find your voice.
Trust them! A lot of thought goes into what we are given. Their approach is different from what I have experienced over the years, they get to the core and very common sense techniques. This isn’t just a course—it’s a toolkit for life. Whether you work in healthcare, leadership, or community mahi or just want to handle conversations better (yes, even the ones at the dinner table!). I highly recommend it!

I would recommend ‘Connecting Korero’ for Whanau, Hapu, and Iwi. Everything I have learnt in the last 4 weeks on this course is greater than what I have learnt in my lifetime and that’s a long time. Life experience helps but this course puts everything into ‘action’. The resources are totally relevant.
